First-Time Attendee Toolkit

Is this your first time attending a TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition? We’re so glad you’ve decided to join us! Please use the resources on this page to learn more about our conference and how you can navigate it.

Tips for Navigating TMS Technical Sessions

Make a Plan

Nearly 4,000 presentations are planned in 15 technical tracks at TMS2019. Use the combination of scheduling tools that works for you to create a plan in advance. You can browse the PDF version of the TMS Conference Guide (which offers information on keynote sessions, networking events, and other special programming) and the TMS Technical Program (which includes details on technical symposia, sessions, and individual presentations) to gain an overview of the conference.

We strongly encourage downloading the TMS2019 mobile app, now available on the App Store or the Google Play™ Store by searching "TMS Annual Meeting," and using it to create a personalized schedule for the week. At the meeting, the app will provide the most up-to-date information on sessions and presentations.

Hold on to Your Badge

You’ll need the TMS2019 attendee badge you receive at registration to gain entry to technical session rooms and networking events. Keep it with you at all times during the conference. (However, we do recommend removing it and placing it in a secure location when you tour the city.) There is a $25 fee to reprint lost badges, so please hold on to yours.

Read the Signs

To help you find session rooms, TMS2019 location maps are placed throughout the Henry B. González Convention Center. Our sessions are grouped by topics, and these topic areas are marked in color-coded zones on our signs to help you find your way.

Session Hop

TMS2019 symposia are organized on more than 80 unique topics, and, within each topic, there are one or more half-day sessions. With your full-conference registration, you may attend any of these symposia, and we encourage “session hopping” if you have varied interests. (It’s one of the benefits of attending a meeting like TMS2019!) Feel free to move between sessions, but do so quietly and respectfully so as not to disturb other attendees.

Read TMS2019 News

Each morning, you’ll receive a notification that the newest edition of TMS2019 News, the daily newsletter for meeting attendees, is available. Scroll through to learn which featured events are planned for the day and to find out about any last-minute schedule or speaker updates. The newsletter is also available through the TMS2019 mobile app.

Tips for Making the Most of Your Meeting Investment

Download the Proceedings

A week before TMS2019 begins, you’ll receive instructions on how to download the collected conference proceedings. We recommend doing this prior to leaving for the meeting so that you don’t have to download large files onsite. Remember that attendees only receive free access to proceedings through April 30, and we don’t want you to miss out on this valuable registration benefit. Check your e-mail for details.

Networking Opportunities

Meeting face-to-face with colleagues from around the world is one of main benefits of attending the TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition. Find a complete list of networking events here.

Plan to Attend a Technical Committee Meeting

One of the best ways to establish lasting networking connections is to attend a TMS technical committee meeting in San Antonio. TMS has more than 30 technical committees, and each one is made up of volunteers who guide the programming, publications, and other activities of the society in that subject area. All technical committee meetings are open to all meeting attendees, so select the committee that best matches your interest area and plan to join us. View a full schedule of technical committee meetings at TMS2019.

Not sure which technical committee would be best for you? Each technical committee sponsors technical programming at TMS2019. Use the TMS2019 final program to look up the symposia you plan to attend and find the name of the technical committee that sponsors that programming. Most likely, that’s the committee for you!
