Graduate Student Events

The TMS 2022 Annual Meeting & Exhibition is an ideal place for graduate students to create the professional networks essential to building a successful career. We encourage you to participate in all of the meeting’s student activities—which are designed for both graduate and undergraduate students—but we also encourage you to look to the next phase of your career by attending some of our young professional activities.

Student Events (for Graduates and Undergraduates)

TMS Materials Bowl: Escape to Anaheim

Date: Sunday, February 27
Time: 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Location: Anaheim Marriott, Platinum Ballroom 6
TMS has gamified its traditional materials-themed knowledge and trivia competition allowing for faster play and a more interactive experience. Material Advantage chapters will gather to compete against each other at TMS2022. Using smartphones to connect to the game, each team will answer questions in a multiple-choice format. Scores are shown in real-time, and teams will compete in an elimination round followed by a championship game. The winning chapter receives cash prizes, a trophy, and bragging rights for the year. Team registration has now closed, but spectators are welcome to come and cheer on their favorite teams. 

Student Networking Mixer

Date: Sunday, February 27
Time: 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Location: Anaheim Marriott, Grand Ballroom E
After the Materials Bowl, take a break and have some fun at this informal social event. Students will have the opportunity to interact with each other and with professionals in a relaxed setting. Refreshments will be provided. This event is open to all students; no tickets or reservations are required.

Technical Division Student Poster Contest

Date: Monday, February 28
Time: 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Location: Anaheim Convention Center, Hall C
Student posters submitted for the Technical Division Student Poster Contest will be on display in the TMS2022 Exhibit Hall. Browse the posters and talk with poster authors during the Exhibit Opening Reception and Poster Presentation Session on Monday evening.

Student Career Forum

Date: Tuesday, March 1
Time: 2:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.
Location: Anaheim Marriot, Platinum Ballroom 9-10
"When should I start my job search?" "Should I continue to graduate school or begin my career?" "How important is networking to my career?" If you find yourself asking questions like these about your future, then you should attend the Student Career Forum. Organized by the TMS Young Professional Committee, this session will feature speakers from various stages of their careers and diverse materials science backgrounds to discuss how to navigate a successful career path in the fields of minerals, metals, and materials.

2022 TMS Bladesmithing Competition: Awards Presentation

Date: Tuesday, March 1
Time: 5:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Location: Anaheim Marriott, Platinum Ballroom 6
Entries for the 2022 TMS Bladesmithing Competition will be on display in the TMS2022 Exhibit Hall (located in Hall C of the Anaheim Convention Center), Monday through Wednesday during exhibit hours. View the entries, then join us on Tuesday to find out which blades will take home the top prizes. 

Young Professional Activities

Young Professional Workshop on Preparing a Winning Application Package

Date: Tuesday, March 1, 2022
Time: 4:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.
In this workshop, instructors from universities, national laboratories, and industry will share their experiences in obtaining and/or recruiting entry-level positions (postdocs, tenure-track faculty positions, etc.) and help guide the young professional on their journey from recent graduate to career professional. There is no additional cost to attend for TMS2022 registrants, but pre-registration is required. The deadline to register is February 25, 2022.

Young Professional Tutorial Luncheon Lecture

Date: Tuesday, March 1
Time: 1:15 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.
Cost: $50 to receive lunch; purchase your ticket through the TMS2022 registration form by February 11. (You may attend the lecture—without lunch—at no cost.)
