Student Competitions at TMS2023

The following competitions are open to undergraduate and graduate students at the TMS 2023 Annual Meeting & Exhibition.

2023 TMS Technical Division Student Poster Contest

The deadline to submit a poster abstract for the 2023 contest has passed. One winning undergraduate poster and one winning graduate poster will be selected in each of the five TMS technical divisions: Extraction & Processing, Functional Materials, Light Metals, Materials Processing & Manufacturing, and Structural Materials.

2023 TMS Materials Bowl: Sign Up to Compete

Applications are now being accepted for the 2023 TMS Materials Bowl, to be held on Sunday, March 19, at TMS2023. In this materials-themed knowledge and trivia competition, student teams will connect to the game using smartphones to answer questions in a multiple-choice format. Both speed and accuracy count in this competition. Scores are shown in real-time, and teams will compete in an elimination round followed by a championship game.

Form Your Team: Only one team per school is permitted. Each team should have four members and may include no more than one graduate student. To enter, fill out the Materials Bowl application form below. Please have the names of your teammates and faculty advisor ready. Deadline to apply is February 24, 2023.

Student Events at TMS2023

In addition to student competitions, TMS2023 will feature the following events geared toward undergraduate and graduate students:

TMS Materials Bowl and Networking Reception
Date: Sunday, March 19, 2023
Materials Bowl Competition Time: 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Networking Reception Time: 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Location: San Diego Convention Center, Room 20AB
Whether you are competing, cheering on your team, or spectating, join us at the 2023 TMS Materials Bowl for a fun and fast-paced event. After the Materials Bowl, take a break and have some fun at an informal networking reception open to students, faculty advisors, recruiters, and Materials Bowl spectators. Light food and beverages will be available. This event is open to all students; no tickets or reservations are required.

Technical Divisions Student Poster Showing and Judging
Date: Monday, March 20
Time: 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Location: San Diego Convention Center, Hall G (Exhibit Hall)
Come and view your fellow students' posters, talk with them about their work, and congratulate the winners at this interactive poster showing and judging session. This event takes place in the TMS2023 Exhibit Hall during the Exhibit Opening Reception and Poster Contest I, meaning that you can also enjoy appetizers, beverages, and networking with other attendees at this event.

2023 Bladesmithing Symposium
Date: Tuesday, March 21
Time: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Location: Hilton San Diego Bayfront, Sapphire I
The Bladesmithing symposium is made up of technical presentations focusing on bladesmithing processes and procedures. It provides an opportunity for participants to present their work associated with, or inspired by, the 2017, 2019, and 2022 Bladesmithing competitions as well as for new presentations from students, student teams, and seasoned Bladesmithing TMS members. This is a traditional symposium and does not require the development or display of a blade. Learn more about Bladesmithing at TMS.

Student Career Forum
Date: Tuesday, March 21
Time: 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Location: Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel, Indigo A
"When should I start my job search?" "Should I continue to graduate school or begin my career?" "How important is networking to my career?" If you find yourself asking questions like these about your future, then you should attend the Student Career Forum. Organized by the TMS Young Professional Committee, this session will feature speakers from various stages of their careers and diverse materials science backgrounds to discuss how to navigate a successful career path in the fields of minerals, metals, and materials. Panelists will include:

Material Advantage Members Save on Registration

If you are a member of the Material Advantage student program for materials science and engineering undergraduate and graduate students, you'll save $30 on your TMS2023 registration rate. Make sure your Material Advantage membership is up to date before you register for TMS2023. Students will not receive Material Advantage membership with their nonmember registration rates this year.
