Metallurgical Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) Study Guide: Question #11

It Is the Policy of The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) to Encourage the Professional Registration of Metallurgical Engineers.

Define a safe internal pressure for 8-inch schedule 5S pipe made from 304L stainless steel. Use the approximate relationship between the internal pressure and stress in a thin-wall pipe. A safety factor of 4 relating to stresses remaining below the yield stress is required. Nominal dimensions of 8-inch pipe are as follows:

Outer diameter 8.625 inches (219 mm)
Wall thickness 0.109 inches (2.77 mm)

You may ignore the allowable variation in pipe wall thickness when performing the calculation.

A safe internal pressure is most nearly:

(A)
79 psig (545 kPa)
(B)
158 psig (1.09 MPa)
(C)
316 psig (2.18 MPa)
(D)
632 psig (4.36 MPa
