Metallurgical Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) Study Guide: Question #35

It Is the Policy of The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) to Encourage the Professional Registration of Metallurgical Engineers.

You specified 304H stainless steel for a load-bearing application at 1,000° F (540°C) in an industrial atmosphere. The stress level is approximately 8,000 psi (55 MPa). Cost is a factor and the correct choice will be the one that satisfies the requirements at the lowest cost. You have been requested to justify the choice, with one person claiming that a cheaper low-carbon or low-alloy steel will do the job just as well, and another faction claiming that a high-chromium stainless steel such as Type 430 should be specified. You should:

(A)
Revise your choice to a low-alloy steel to reduce cost.
(B)
Revise your choice to Type 430 stainless steel to ensure adequate oxidation resistance.
(C)
Retain your choice of 304H, based on strength and oxidation resistance at service conditions.
(D)
Revise your choice to Alloy 625 based on better strength and oxidation resistance at service conditions.
