Metallurgical Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) Study Guide: Question #9

It Is the Policy of The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) to Encourage the Professional Registration of Metallurgical Engineers.

An integrated steel maker produces carbon steel plate for industry. The plate is made in a mill at a rate of 450 tons/hr and sent to a laminar flow water cooling system to reduce the steel temperature from 1725°F to 400°F in a controlled manner. The plate can be considered to be infinite in length and width and is 2" thick. Cooling water is available for cooling at 95°F and returns to a cooling tower at 130°F

Other information includes:

Steel thermal conductivity, k = 20.2 BTU/(hr.ft.FO)
Steel heat capacity, Cp = 0.12 BTU/(lb.FO)
Steel density, r = 0.283 lb/in3

The steam enthalpy is 1005 BTU/lb. How much water (gal/min) is evaporated in the cooling tower to remove 185 million BTU/hr?

(A)
370
(B)
3,070
(C)
22,000
(D)
184,000
