TMS is dedicated to encouraging the lifelong education of materials science and engineering professionals through registration and certification, short courses, workshops and tutorials, meeting symposia, and other continuing education activities.

EDUCATION RESOURCE AWARDS

Apply for one of five TMS Education Resource Awards by submitting a slide presentation to the Materials Technology@TMS Education Community before November 26, 2007.

Award recipients receive online recognition; a certificate; free registration for the TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition; and an opportunity to compete for the TMS/University Materials Council Education Resource Award. The presentation should relate to one of the five TMS technical divisions and contribute toward broadening education resources for classroom use and professional development. For full details and to apply, visit the Education Community of Materials Technology@TMS.

REGISTRATION AND CERTIFICATION

As the professional society for scientists and engineers in the minerals, metals and materials fields, TMS supports the licensure of professional engineers and endorses the necessary standards for education, experience, examination, and continuing professional development. Learn more about Professional Registration.

In addition, TMS promotes engineering management certification through courses and related resources. Learn more about Engineering Management Certification.

SHORT COURSES, WORKSHOPS and TUTORIALS

TMS and its five technical divisions—Extraction & Processing Division; Light Metals Division; Structural Materials Division; Materials Processing & Manufacturing Division; and Electronic, Magnetic & Photonic Materials Division—sponsor technical and nontechnical short courses, workshops and tutorials for materials professionals and students.

These continuing education activities are offered at various geographic locations and online. Visit our Short Courses Home Page for more information.

MEETING SYMPOSIA

TMS frequently hosts scholarly symposia on issues of education, accreditation, teaching approaches and other related subjects. The symposia are typically held at TMS sponsored conferences. View TMS Global Meetings Calendar.

TMS WEBCASTS

TMS webcasts are recorded presentations that provide timely technical updates as well as educational materials. They feature technical content presented with visuals and audio. Often the webcasts include videos and models for a multifaceted learning experience. Visit the TMS Web Events page for more details.
ACCREDITATION

TMS is a “participating body” of the Accreditation Board of Engineering Technology (ABET) in the United States. TMS has curricular responsibility for university programs in metallurgical, materials and other engineering programs, including those in polymers, welding engineering, and welding technology. To learn about becoming a qualified evaluator with ABET, visit the TMS Accreditation Home Page.

FUTURE PROFESSIONALS

As part of our continuing education activities, TMS offers assistance to future professionals in the field through the Sloan Career Cornerstone Center. This site helps to answer frequently asked questions, such as “What career paths exist for a materials engineer?” or “How do I prepare for entry into the field?” and much more.
