THE MINERALS, METALS & MATERIALS SOCIETY |
TMS Foundation HomeYoung people entering the science and engineering professions are experiencing profound changes in practice. Faced with a myriad of educational and professional challenges, today's students and emerging young professionals must be provided the support they need as our most valuable resource for guaranteeing the continued strength of our profession and the advancement of the industry.
As defined in the TMS Foundation Bylaws, the mission of the Foundation is "To support the development of materials professionals within the context of our global society."
"We must open the doors of opportunity...but we must also equip our people to walk through those doors." Lyndon B. Johnson In 1993, the TMS Foundation was established to develop and fund programs that will fully prepare future generations of professionals for leadership roles in the international minerals, metals, and materials community.
Through the generous support of TMS members, friends, and corporate contributors, The Foundation is currently funding these activities and others that promote and ensure the continued future advancement of our profession. For details on the latest developments, check out the TMS Foundation newsletter, Foundation News, available each month in JOM. STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS:
Separately, the TMS Foundation through a grant from the Dr. Om Arora family, has established the Shri Ram Arora Award for Materials Science and Engineering Education as a means of perpetuating their father's, Shri Ram Arora, quest for continual learning and academic challenge. The award will recognize, encourage, and support the quest for knowledge within the international materials science and engineering community. The award will be based on merit, however, in recognition of the Arora family's interest and heritage, applicants residing in India shall be given priority. Should there not be a qualified candidate from India, candidates of Indian heritage, currently residing in other countries, shall be considered. The applicant should be a graduate student majoring in materials science or a related field, or of post-doctoral status and currently, and actively involved in materials research. The applicant may not have reached his/her 30th birthday by the submission deadline date. The Shri Ram Arora Award will grant up to $2,500 to be distributed in two parts. The first part of the award is a $1,000 cash award to be used at the recipient's discretion. The second part of the award, the remaining $1,500 should be applied toward travel, accommodation, and registration expenses to attend the TMS Annual Meeting. The award recipient is encouraged to submit an abstract and prepare an oral or poster presentation for the next TMS Annual Meeting, but this is not a requirement for application or consideration for the award. The Submission Information and Application Form for the Shri Ram Arora Award for Materials Science and Engineering is due July 1st of each year. Selections will be made by August 15. The award will be presented during the next TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition. YOUNG LEADERS PROGRAM: TMS TEACHING FELLOWS:
