The TMS Foundation

The TMS Foundation was established in 1993, to develop and fund programs that will fully prepare future generations of professionals for leadership roles in the international minerals, metals, and materials community.

As defined in the TMS Foundation Bylaws, the mission of the Foundation is to support the development of materials professionals within the context of our global society by:

• Providing scholarships to today’s most promising materials science and engineering students, investing in the future of the profession and the industries it serves.
• Funding programs that assist young professionals in attaining the highest level of technical, professional, and leadership development.
• Supporting projects, programs, and tools that have a significant impact on materials engineering education by virtue of content, methodology, or scope.
• Investing in knowledge, people, products, and infrastructure that positively impact the quality of life in society through materials innovation.
• Support the stewardship of earth and environment by promoting materials solutions.

FOUNDATION ACTIVITIES

The first winner of the Vittoria de Nora Prize for Environmental Improvements in Metallurgical Industries, Zeljka Pokrajcic, receives an award of $20,000 from 2009 TMS President Ray Peterson. Pokrajcic was honored for her work in reducing energy consumption in the comminution of ores.

STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS
The TMS Foundation is now providing expanded scholarship opportunities that will ensure the continued progression of the profession by providing financial aid to outstanding science and engineering students. The scholarship program offers several annual awards including:

• J. Keith Brimacombe Presidential Scholarship
  This scholarship winner is awarded a $5,000 TMS J. Keith Brimacombe Presidential Scholarship. This award is available to undergraduate students in their sophomore or junior years. • TMS Technical Division Scholarships
  The five technical divisions of TMS have scholarships for students whose academic major is concentrated in a field related to the divisions' concentrated areas of materials science and engineering.  This award is available to undergraduate students in their sophomore or junior years. • Shri Ram Arora Award
  Through a grant from the Dr. Om Arora family, the Shri Ram Arora Award for Materials Science and Engineering Education was established to further the quest of their father, Shri Ram Arora, for continual learning and academic challenge. The award will recognize, encourage, and support the quest for knowledge within the international materials science and engineering community. The award will be based on merit, however, in recognition of the Arora family's interest and heritage, applicants residing in India shall be given priority. Should there not be a qualified candidate from India, candidates of Indian heritage, currently residing in other countries, shall be considered. The applicant should be a graduate student majoring in materials science or a related field, or of post-doctoral status and currently, and actively involved in materials research. The applicant must not have reached his/her 30th birthday by the submission deadline date. The Shri Ram Arora Award will grant up to $2,500 to be distributed in two parts. The first part of the award is a $1,000 cash award to be used at the recipient's discretion. The second part of the award, the remaining $1,500, should be applied toward travel, accommodations, and registration expenses to attend the TMS Annual Meeting. The award recipient is encouraged to submit an abstract and prepare an oral or poster presentation for the next TMS Annual Meeting, but this is not a requirement for application or consideration for the award.

ENDOWED AWARDS
TMS Foundation occasionally works with outside donors to administer awards with fixed stipends. The Vittoria de Nora Prize for Environmental Improvements in Metallurgical Industries, aimed at professionals up to the age 40, is the most recent example.

• The Vittoria de Nora Prize for Environmental Improvements in Metallurgical Industries
  This prize recognizes outstanding materials science research and development contributions to the reduction of environmental impacts, and particularly greenhouse gas emissions, as applied in global metallurgical industries, especially focused on extractive processing. The prize commemorates Vittorio de Nora, a pioneer in the materials processing field and one of the great Italian technologists of the 20th century. Five annual awards will be made, with the first given beginning in 2010. The prize consists of a cash award of $20,000 and a certificate. The award in 2012 will be $25,000 to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the birth of Vittorio de Nora. This award, endowed by de Nora’s family, is administered through the Foundation.

YOUNG LEADERS PROGRAM
This program was established to provide a "ladder to leadership" for the world's most promising young leaders involved in materials science and engineering. This program is intended to provide funds for ten young professionals to attend the TMS Annual and Fall Meetings (Materials Science and Technology – MS&T) and "intern" as members of the TMS divisional leadership, participating in, and contributing to, the decision-making and long-range planning of the Society.
