MS&T Session Examines New NMAB Reports
ICME and Materials for Military Applications Discussed at October Conference
TMS
Posted on: 09/03/2008... Recently the National Materials Advisory Board (NMAB) of the U.S. National Academies identified two reports of interest to the materials science and engineering community: Managing Materials for a Twenty-First Century Military and Integrated Computational Materials Engineering: A Transformational Discipline for Improved Competitiveness and National Security.

The results of both reports will be discussed at a special session during the Materials Science & Technology 2008 (MS&T'08) conference, which will take place October 5–9 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Registration for MS&T'08 is open through September 26, and the preliminary conference program is now on-line.

How Could Universities Improve Gender Equity in MSE Departments?
JOM Asks Readers to Weigh In
TMS
Posted on: 08/28/2008... At a recent conference on gender equity in university materials science and engineering (MSE) departments, participants agreed that women are under-represented among MSE faculty. What do you think universities should do to improve the situation?
  • Actively seek diverse pools of candidates for faculty positions
  • Require training on gender bias for all involved in tenure and promotion decisions
  • Institute mentoring for young female faculty
  • Adopt family-friendly policies and ensure that faculty are not penalized for using them
  • Do nothing and let things sort themselves out naturally

PRESIDENT'S BLOG
Read Diran's Bio Each month, 2008 TMS President Diran Apelian will discuss issues of relevance to the society through a new on-line TMS President Blog and Podcast Zone.

In September, Apelian reviews possible changes to the way TMS is governed. For months after the TMS 2008 Annual Meeting, a committee reviewed the TMS bylaws and other governing documents, looking for areas that were crying out for an update. The proposed changes were considered by the Board of Directors in July, and now members need to voice their opinions. Apelian’s blog offers details on the bylaw changes and other rule changes needed to comply with the law and with members’ changing needs.
