TMS Fall Meeting '98: Special Events

October 11-15, 1998 · TMS FALL MEETING '98 · Rosemont, Illinois

Focusing on physical metallurgy and materials, the TMS Fall Meeting '98 features a wide array of technical symposia sponsored by The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS). A poster session is also planned. As a greater convenience for attendees, the meeting is typically colocated with ASM International's Materials Solutions Conference. Approximately 100 technical sessions will focus on key information and successful strategies to give attendees insight into the research, development, and application of new materials processes, analysis techniques, and equipment advances.

Dr. Schwartz
ASM and TMS Distinguished Lectureship in Materials and Society
Today we are increasingly focused on achieving a sustainable global economic and social system which both satisfies human needs and does not despoil the earth. The centrality of materials usage to this subject should make the achievement of sustainability our issue, but environmental issues have not always been visible on our lists as we identified our priorities for future attention.

Our technical report card is certainly impressive. Improvements in processing, materials substitution, design to minimize materials usage, and recycling of metals and polymers, have all been remarkable. However, we are faced with twin dreadnoughts of change in the next decades, economic/technological ascendancy of developing nations and rising population. Add to these the need to reduce the effluence of greenhouse gases and we must anticipate formidable technological upheaval throughout the materials cycle.

Our professional societies need to step forward and play larger and significantly more visible roles in this arena. Working individually and in concert with others, the societies must broadcast our achievements, identify future areas for action, support industrial roadmapping efforts, and join with all who will participate in clarifying the flow of materials throughout their life-cycles.
