The Merton C. Flemings Symposium: Social Functions

Flemings PhotoThis symposium at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is being held to honor Professor Merton C. Fleming's many years of service to the field of materials science education and research. The symposium will celebrate his exceptionally productive career and contributions as an educator, a researcher, a technology policy leader, a friend, and a mentor. The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE), MIT, and The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) are the primary sponsors of the symposium. Several other organizations and companies to which to which Professor Flemings' has made significant contributions have agreed to cosponsor the event.

SOCIAL HIGHLIGHTS

Various social functions have been planned to supplement the formal technical program.

The functions are included in the registration fee for full-conference registrants. Tickets for students and accompanying persons may be purchased at the registration desk. The Welcoming Reception, and the Wednesday Poster Session / Social Hour are complimentary to all attendees.

Welcoming Reception, June 27, 2000

All attendees, students and guests are invited to attend the hosted Welcoming Reception on Tuesday, June 27, 2000 from 7:00 PM–9:00 PM at the Royal Sonesta Hotel.

Symposium Luncheon, June 28, 2000

For the convenience of attendees, a luncheon will be served during the lunch break time on Wednesday, June 28. The luncheon will be served in the MIT Faculty Club and is included in the full-conference registration fee. The cost per luncheon for students and guests is $20 and may be purchased at the conference registration desk.

Poster Session / Social Hour, June 28, 2000

A special social hour and poster presentation will be held Wednesday, June 28, 5:10 PM-6:30 PM in Tang Center. Complementary refreshments will be served.

Poster Session / Box Lunch, June 29, 2000

A box lunch will be served in Poster Session Area of Tang Center during the lunch break on Thursday, June 29. The box lunch is included in the fee of all full-conference registrants. Tickets, for the lunch, may be purchased by students and accompanying persons at the registration desk.

Symposium Banquet, June 29, 2000--Featuring a performance by Yo-Yo Ma

On Thursday, June 29, MIT and the organizers of the conference will host a recep-tion and banquet at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston’s Back Bay from 6:00PM to 9:30PM. The banquet will take place in the Koch Gallery, which displays international high renaissance & baroque painting. The museum’s fine Asian art collection will also be open for viewing. Yo-Yo Ma will be performing. Mr. Ma is considered the leading cellist of his generation and one of the world’s most talented and versatile musicians. Buses will be departing from the Royal Sonesta Hotel and the Tang Center at 5:30 for the Museum of Fine Arts.

AUTHORS' COFFEE

Coffee and a continental breakfast will be served in the MIT Faculty Club each morning from 7:15 AM to 8:00 AM for all authors scheduled to present that day.
