ICMOVPE XII: Travel Information

May 30-June 4, 2004 · 12th International Conference on Metal Organic Vapor Phase Epitaxy · Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii

ABOUT HAWAII

Maui No Ka ‘Oi (Maui is the best) is what the locals say, and visitors agree.

Lahaina: A National Historic District. Once the capital of Hawaii, Lahaina was the largest whaling port of the Pacific during the 1800s. Today, it’s a National Historic District with restored buildings, museums, missionary homes and a replica of a 19th century whaling ship - not to mention fun places to eat and shop along the historic waterfront.

The island was formed by two volcanoes that erupted long ago -- the extinct 5,788-ft Pu’u Kukui and the dormant 10,023-ft Haleakala (now the centerpiece of a national park). The resulting depression between the two is what gives Maui its nickname, the Valley Isle. Maui’s volcanic history gives it much of its beauty. The roads around the island are lined with rich red soil, Central Maui is still carpeted with grassy green, and the deep blue of ocean and sky mingles with the red and green of Maui’s topography.

Many places claim the power to create memories that will last a lifetime, but few fulfill the promise like the Island of Maui. Maui’s got it, with near-perfect weather, great places to stay, uncrowded beaches, and a setting that inspires awe and a sense of wonder. If you are looking for adventure and new experiences, we’ve got that too. Discover Maui, where whale-filled seas meet heavenly beaches. This is a place where the sun warms tropical trade winds that blow your troubles away. Snorkel in crystal-clear waters or play golf on world-class courses of green, velvet perfection.

Getting to Maui has never been easier. All major carriers now offer direct flights from the US mainland to Kahului (OGG). Additionally, several flights a day leave to and from other islands, with most originating at Honolulu International Airport (a short 20-minute flight away). Upon arrival, you’ll find every mode of transportation you expect in a major destination. Taxis are readily available. Limos can be arranged. Shuttle service is available. Or you can rent a car - you may be surprised to find that our rental rates and packages are generally lower than those found on the US mainland.
