The International Symposium on Semiconductor Light Emitting Devices is a continuation of the biennial meeting previously named International Symposium on Blue Lasers and Light Emitting Devices.

The first meeting was chaired by Professor Akihiko Yoshikawa at Chiba University in Japan in 1996. The sixth meeting in the series was chaired by Professor Bernard Gil in Montpelier, France, in 2006. This seventh meeting is the first one to be held in the United States.
