MEETING INFORMATION

The 5th Summer School for Integrated Computational Materials Education
July 6-17, 2016, Berkeley, California
Computational approaches have transformed many scientific and engineering disciplines in the last decade. While the complexity of the physics and multi-scale nature of materials makes modeling challenging, modern methods of computational materials science are also beginning to produce widespread impact in the design and development of new materials. Thus, a recent survey performed and published in JOM, as well as the National Academy of Engineering Report, clearly indicates the need for integration of computational techniques into undergraduate MSE curricula. To address the challenges in this integration, the “Summer School for Integrated Computational Materials Education,” is a two-week program that includes a “crash course” on computational materials science and engineering (CMSE) and focus sessions on educational modules that can be adopted into existing core courses. An introduction into tools used in undergraduate-level thermodynamics, kinetics, material physics, and mechanical behavior courses will be presented.

DMMM2 - Diversity in the Minerals, Metals, and Materials Professions Summit
July 25-26, 2016, Evanston, Illinois
Abundant research demonstrates that the demographics of the workforce in the minerals, metals, and materials communities is not representative of the population as a whole, leaving a diverse set of ideas, talents, and resources untapped. To maintain the growth and vitality of the materials profession, it is imperative that the community works to expand participation among underrepresented groups to access these populations’ unique contributions and approaches to problem solving that can help stimulate discovery and innovation. This conference thus aims to engage the field in discussions about the past, present, and future of diversity in materials science and engineering with a particular focus on groups that have been underrepresented due to race or gender. Similar to the first summit, this event will have a culminating emphasis on the development and implementation of personnel skills and sharing of resources that participants can use and share immediately upon returning to their workplaces.
