COMPREHENSIVE ENERGY LEGISLATION INTRODUCED IN HOUSE
FROM THE FEDERATION OF MATERIALS SOCIETIES: Rep. Ralph Hall (R-TX), ranking minority member of the House Science Committee, has introduced the Energy for America Act (H.R. 2483), which he says is aimed at reducing U.S. dependence on foreign oil by making current energy sources cleaner and more efficient while investing in next-generation energy technologies. Joining Hall as cosponsors are Representatives Judy Biggert (R-IL), Phil Gingrey (R-GA), Bob Inglis (R-SC), Michael McCaul (R-TX), and Lamar Smith (R-TX). Pointing out that “there is no silver bullet to resolve our energy needs,” Hall emphasized the need to fund cutting edge research. Specifically, the bill would promote the following initiatives:
- Create a research, development, and demonstration program for advanced biofuel technologies
- Create a basic and applied research program for energy storage solutions
- Develop advanced vehicle technologies
- Encourage high-risk/high-reward energy technology development
- Authorize training in advanced energy and green building technologies
- Establish a program to use water produced from domestic energy sources
- Establish an advanced energy efficiency technology program for buildings
- Authorize studies in the use of domestic clean coal
