06/20 - HOUSE SET TO VOTE ON ENERGY APPROPRIATIONS

FROM THE FEDERATION OF MATERIALS SOCIETIES: On June 6, the House Appropriations Committee reported out the Energy and Water Development Appropriations bill, which would significantly increase funding for the DOE Office of Science. The office would receive $4.514 billion overall, an increase of $116.22 million above the administration’s budget request, and $716.7 million more than the fiscal year 2007 funding level. Of particular interest to the materials community, Basic Energy Sciences would be funded at $1.498 billion, High Energy Physics at $782.2 million, Nuclear Physics at $471.3 million, and Fusion Energy Sciences at $427.9 million—all the same as the administration’s request. Scientific Infrastructure would receive $151.8 million, an increase above the administration’s request which appears to be directed mainly to Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Workforce Development would be funded at $11 million, the same as the budget request.
