"GREEN CHEMISTRY" BILL PASSES HOUSE
FROM THE FEDERATION OF MATERIALS SOCIETIES: In one of its first actions after reconvening from the August recess, the U.S House of Representatives passed H.R. 2850, the Green Chemistry Research and Development Act. "Green chemistry" is defined as chemistry and chemical engineering to design chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use or generation of hazardous substances while producing high-quality products through safe and efficient manufacturing processes. The bill, which has passed the House in both of the last two sessions of Congress, would
- Authorize a coordinated research and development program using existing funds under the Environmental Protection Agency, National Science Foundation, National Institute of Standards and Technology, and Department of Energy;
- Encourage green chemistry research, development, education, and technology transfer
- Facilitate the adoption of green chemistry innovations
- Expand education and training for students, chemists, and chemical engineers in green chemistry science and engineering
The bill now goes to the Senate, where it has died twice before. House sponsor Phil Gingrey (R-GA), said "I hope the third time will truly be a charm for this bill, because the sooner we enact Green Chemistry legislation, the sooner companies across America can utilize this innovative development."
