11/19 - NANOTECH SAFETY AND HEALTH TO BE A MAJOR FACTOR IN REAUTHORIZATION

FROM THE FEDERATION OF MATERIALS SOCIETIES: In preparation for reauthorization of the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) in 2008, the House Science Committee's Subcommittee on Research and Education has been studying environmental, health, and safety (EHS) issues. An interim NNI report outlining research priorities was released in August, but witnesses at a recent subcommittee hearing acknowledged that greater attention must be paid to EHS investigations, and the co-chairman of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology said the council "strongly encourages the Nanotechnology Environmental and Health Implications working group to complete its work as expeditiously as possible." House Subcommittee ranking minority member Vernon Ehlers (R-MI) noted that "There is considerable concern by various interested parties that the environmental and safety risks of nanotechnology may undermine public confidence in products that contain such nanomaterials. . . . An atmosphere of trust between the nanotechnology industry and the public is necessary to allow benign products to benefit our nation, and to ensure that dangerous products and byproducts never enter the market or ecosystem. Congress must continually assess whether nanotechnology research priorities to address unintended public health consequences of nanotechnology have been established and are being effectively implemented."
