11/19 - DEFENSE APPROPRIATIONS A MIXED BAG FOR RESEARCH


FROM THE FEDERATION OF MATERIALS SOCIETIES: The Defense appropriations bill passed on November 8 provides $12.77 billion for science and technology programs at the Department of Defense. This is $2 billion (18.5%) above the administration's proposed budget, but $556 million (4.2%) below the FY 2007 level. Basic research (account 6.1) receives $1.63 billion, a 4.5% increase over FY 2007 and 14.4% above the administration's request. Applied research (6.2 programs) is funded at $5.10 billion, a 4.4% cut from FY 2007 but 17% more than requested by the administration. Advanced technology development (6.3 programs) receives $6.04 billion, a 6.1% decrease from FY 2007 but a 21.1% increase over the administration's request. The bill also funds the National Defense Education Program/SMART at the administration's requested $44.4 million, an increase of $25 million above the FY 2007 level.
