03/17 - NANOTECHNOLOGY INITIATIVE TO BE REAUTHORIZED

FROM THE FEDERATION OF MATERIALS SOCIETIES: As part of the overall reauthorization of the National Science Foundation required before the end of the year, Congress will be reauthorizing the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI). The House Science and Technology Subcommittee on Research and Education already has held three in a series of hearings on how well the NNI is functioning and what needs to be done to improve its focus. The latest, on March 11, focused on “The Transfer of NNI Research Outcomes for Commercial and Public Benefit,” particularly nanomanufacturing research support and SBIR programs. As Subcommittee Chairman Brian Baird (D-WA) said in his opening statement, “the federal investment in basic research is critical to nanotechnology’s development. But this investment will be squandered if we do not cultivate the technological advancement to usable products or processes.”
