TMS Logo Recipients: The 1997 EPD Extraction & Processing Technology Award

The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society's Extraction & Processing Division Extraction & Processing Technology Award was established in 1955 and recognizes a paper containing notable contributions to the advancement of the technology of the extraction and processing of nonferrous metals.

Roderick I.L. Guthrie

Biography: Roderick I.L. Guthrie is the MacDonald Professor of Metallurgy and director of McGill Metals Processing Center at McGill University. He earned his B.Sc.Eng. in metallurgy at Imperial College in 1963 and his Ph.D. at the Royal School of Mines at London University in 1967. He is the inventor of the liquid metal cleanliness analyzer (LiMCA).

Quote on behalf of the Extraction & Processing Technology Award Winners: "These awards recognize the efforts of individuals whose aims are to learn, discover, and teach rather than be involved with financial gain. As such, they recompense moderate or poor levels of financial reward in a most appropriate way. TMS is the best metallurgical society in North American in terms of professionalism, vision, and competence/efficiency."

Jeong W. Han

Biography: Jeong W. Han is a lecturer in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Kyonggi University in Korea. He earned his B.S. in 1981 in metallurgical engineering at Hanyang University and his M.S. and Ph.D. in metallurgical engineering at Seoul National University in 1983 and 1987, respectively. He has two patents pending on an iron-tapping method in blast furnace operation.

Sang Hoon Joo

Biography: Sang Hoon Joo is a general team manager of the smelting reduction research team at the Research Institute of Industrial Science and Technology in Korea. He earned his B.S. and M.S. in metallurgical engineering at Seoul National University in 1982 and 1984, respectively, and his Ph.D. in metallurgical engineering at McGill University in 1990.
