TMS Logo Recipients: The 1998 EPD Extraction & Processing Technology Award

The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society's Extraction & Processing Division Extraction & Processing Technology Award was established in 1955 and recognizes a paper containing notable contributions to the advancement of the technology of the extraction and processing of nonferrous metals.
Paper Titles: "Numerical Study of Steady Turbulent Flow through Bifurcated Nozzles in Continuous Casting" by F.M. Najjar, B.G. Thomas, and D. Hershey; and "Flow and Thermal Behavior of the Top Surface Flux/Powder Layers in Continuous Casting Molds" by R.W. McDavid and B.G. Fady Michel Najjar

Biography: Fady Michel Najjar is a senior systems engineer for NCSA at the University of Illinois. He earned his B.S. in mechanical engineering at the American University of Beirut in 1987 and his M.S. and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at the University of Illinois in 1990 and 1994, respectively.

Brian G. Thomas

Biography: Brian G. Thomas is an associate professor of mechanical engineering in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Illinois. He earned his B.S. in metallurgical engineering from McGill University in 1979 and his Ph.D. in metallurgical engineering from the University of British Columbia in 1985.

Donald E. Hershey

Biography: Donald E. Hershey is an engineer for Procter and Gamble Company. He earned his B.S. in mechanical engineering from Purdue University in 1990 and his M.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois in 1992.

Robert M. McDavid

Biography: Robert M. McDavid is a senior project engineer for Automated Analysis Corporation and a consultant to Caterpillar. He earned his B.S. at the University of the West Indies in 1990 and his M.S. and Ph.D. at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1994 and 1997, respectively.
