Citation: "For his many successes in translating material research into commercial products and processes."

Biography: H. Wayne Hayden is manager of the Engineering Materials Section/Metals Processing Laboratory User Center in the Metals and Ceramics Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Dr. Hayden earned his B.S., M.S., and Sc.D. in metallurgy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1960, 1961, and 1963, respectively. He has held management and director positions at Martin Marietta Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. During his career, he has been involved in the development of copper-cored composite materials for U.S. coinage, compositions and processing methods for ultrafine grain size in two-phase nickel-based alloys and stainless steels, a continuous process for the production of uranium alloys.

He is the coauthor of a textbook in materials science, a member of the U.S. Department of Energy/Aluminum Industry team for developing the industry and inert anode roadmaps, and a member of the National Advisory Council for Maryville College. Quote: "Applying technology to practice as new production processes and new products is the determinant for establishing the real value of research and development. The creation of market opportunities exceeds the creation of knowledge as the essential basis for ensuring continuing support for technology development. I am very honored to be recognized by TMS for my role in applying materials technology to practice. I hope that my continuing efforts in support of advanced materials will match the spirit of this award."
