Sam R. Coriell

Citation: "For his contributions to the area of solidification and crystal growth."

Biography: Sam R. Coriell is a research chemist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. He earned his B.S. and Ph.D. in chemistry at the Ohio State University in 1956 and 1961, respectively. He joined the Statistical Physics Section of the National Bureau of Standards in 1961, then moved to the Metallurgy Division in 1963.

During his long career with the institute, Dr. Coriell has authored or coauthored more than 100 publications on alloy solidification and crystal growth. He has received two U.S. Department of Commerce Silver Medals, is a fellow of ASM International, and served on the executive committee of the American Association for Crystal Growth for 12 years. He is currently an associate editor of the Journal of Crystal Growth.

Quote: "My introduction to alloy solidification occurred at a two-week summer course organized by Professor Chalmers. I was later privileged to work with him and Tom Surek on the growth of shaped crystals. I want also to acknowledge my colleagues for their support and significant contributions to my research. I greatly admire the research of other recipients of the Bruce Chalmers Award and fortunately have been able to collaborate with many of them. Therefore, I am most pleased and honored to receive the award."
