Recipients: 1999 TMS Distinguished Service Award



The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society's Distinguished Service Award recognizes recognizes a member's outstanding contributions to TMS. The recipient must be a member of TMS and must have exhibited exceptional devotion of time, effort, thought, and action toward furthering the Society's mission through administrative/function activities.

William A.T. Clark

Citation: "For outstanding contributions to the growth of TMS student, student chapter, and local chapter programs and to the development of the Society's information distribution systems."

Biography: William A.T. Clark is the associate dean of the graduate school at the Ohio State University. He earned his B.Sc. in physics with materials science at the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom, in 1972, and his D.Phil. in metallurgy and science of materials in 1976 from the University of Oxford, United Kingdom.

During his career as a professor of materials science and engineering, Dr. Clark has authored or coauthored more than 90 publications and edited four proceedings volumes. He served as TMS Student Affairs Director from 1993-1996. He was a Brockhues scholar of St. Edmund Hall, Oxford, from 1972-1976 and a Science Research Council postdoctoral fellow from 1976-1978.

Gerald L. Liedl

Citation: "For tirelessly championing the educational activities of TMS; Accreditation, Student Affairs, and the Career Resource Center for Materials Science and Engineering."

Biography: Gerald L. Liedl is a professor and head of the School of Materials Engineering at Purdue University. He earned his B.S. and Ph.D. in metallurgical engineering at Purdue University in 1955 and 1960, respectively. During his career, he has served as director and founder of the Midwest Superconductivity Consortium, assistant head of the School of Materials Engineering at Purdue University, and founding chair of the University Materials Council. He was appointed by the governor of Indiana to the Indiana Steel Industry Advisory Committee, on which he served from 1987-1991. He currently serves as director of the Midwest Analytical Team for Research Instrumentation of X-Rays (since 1980) and a faculty member of the National Technical University (since 1991).

Dr. Liedl is the co-coordinator of the Career Resource Center for Materials Science and Engineering and served as chair of the TMS Accreditation and Education and Professional Affairs committees. He also served as TMS Director of Education from 1995-1998.
