Recipient: 1999 Educator Award



The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society's Educator Award was established in 1985 to recognize outstanding contributions to education in metallurgical engineering and/or materials science and engineering. The award is not limited to the classroom but also includes recognition of innovative ways of educating the general populace.

Merton G. Flemings

Citation: "For outstanding contributions to the unification of the field of materials science and engineering and education of leaders in materials processing and solidification."

Biography: Merton G. Flemings is a professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He earned his S.B., S.M., and Sc.D. in metallurgy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1951, 1952, and 1954, respectively. Following two years of work at Abex Corporation in Mahwah, New Jersey, Dr. Flemings joined the staff of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as an assistant professor in 1956. Since then, he has served as Abex professor of metallurgy, Ford professor of engineering, Toyoto professor of materials processing, associate director of the Center for Materials Science and Engineering, and head of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

Dr. Flemings is the author or coauthor of about 270 papers and three books. He has received 26 patents in the fields of solidification science, foundry technology, and materials processing. He has received numerous honors and is an honorary member of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts Sciences. He is a fellow of TMS, the Japan Foundrymen's Society, the Iron and Steel Institute of Japan, and the Japan Institute of Metals.
