Recipients: The 2000 LMD Light Metals Award

The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society's Light Metals Division Light Metals Award, established in 1983, is awarded to the author(s) of a paper published in the preceding year's volume of Light Metals, which notably exemplifies the solution of a practical problem.
Paper Title: “Dimensioning of Cooling Fins for High-Amperage Reduction Cells”, Light Metals 1999

Ingo Eick

Biography: Ingo L. Eick is in charge of smelter technology projects relating to thermoelectric simulations and measurements of electrolysis cells, potroom ventilation, and logistics at VAW Aluminum Technology. He earned his M.S. in nonlinear physics from Georg-Aust-Universität Göttingen in Germany, and his Ph.D. in 1992 from Technische Hochschule Darmstadt in applied physics.

Detlef Vogelsang

Biography: Detlef Vogelsang is a senior scientist at VAW Aluminum Technology. He received his Ph.D. in 1972 from the Technical University Brunswik in Germany. He joined VAW in 1976, and headed up several departments, including mathematics and data processing, technical and scientific information systems, and process modeling. He is the author of numerous papers in the Light Metals series.

Quote: “The Light Metals Award is a great honor and pleasure to me. It also confirms that there are still many topics relating to the cell and potroom, which have to be investigated in order to get a full understanding of the aluminum electrolysis process on the way to a virtual smelter model. This Light Metals Award serves as an added incentive to continue and intensify our research work.”
