The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society's SMD Distinguished Scientist/Engineer Award, established in 1996, recognizes an individual who has made a long-lasting contribution to the fundamental understanding of microstructure, properties, and performance of structural materials for industrial applications.

Subra Suresh

Citation: "For seminal contributions to the understanding of effects of microstructures on fatigue and technical leadership in functionally-graded materials."

Biography: Subra Suresh is the R.P.Simmons Professor and head of the department of materials science and engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Prof. Suresh earned a B.Tech. in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in 1977, an M.S. from Iowa State University in 1979, and an Sc.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1981. He began his career as a professor of engineering at Brown University.

Prof. Suresh has authored two books, nine patent applications, and 185 papers and co-edited six books.

Honors and awards received include: TMS Robert Lansing Hardy Award; TMS Champion H. Mathewson Medal; Fellow of TMS, ASM International, American Ceramic Society, and ASME; Honorary Member of Materials Research Society, India; and the American Ceramic Society Ross Coffin Purdy Award.
