John M. Poate

Citation: "For the development of ion beam techniques for the analysis and modification of new surface properties of several classes of electronic materials."

Biography: John Poate is chief technology officer of Axcelis Technologies, a supplier of ion implantation and processing equipment for the semiconductor industry. Dr. Poate earned both a B.S. in physics in 1962 and an M.S. in nuclear physics in 1964 from Melbourne University and a Ph.D. in nuclear physics from Australian National University in 1967. Quote: “The TMS John Bardeen Award is particularly prestigious, and it is a great honor for me to receive the award. As a Bell Labs alumnus, the associations with John Bardeen and electronic materials are especially meaningful. I have presented many papers at TMS meetings on thin film reactions, ion implantation in Si and ion implantation metallurgy, laser annealing and diffusion in crystalline amorphous Si. TMS is a unique forum for presenting and discussing those critical areas of electronic materials.”
