The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society's Distinguished Service Award recognizes recognizes a member's outstanding contributions to TMS. The recipient must be a member of TMS and must have exhibited exceptional devotion of time, effort, thought, and action toward furthering the Society's mission through administrative/function activities.

Joseph D. Defilippi

Citation: For outstanding leadership, dedication, and service in advancing the financial well-being of TMS."

Biography: Joseph D. Defilippi is division manager of Product Technology Research for United States Steel.

Dr. Defilippi earned his B.S. and M.S. in metallurgical engineering in 1960 and 1963, respectively, and a Ph.D. in metallurgy and materials science in 1966 from the Carnegie Institute of Technology.

Dr. Defilippi has served as financial officer for the Extraction & Processing Division Council and as a member of the Financial Planning and Long-Range Planning Committees, including financial planning officer from 1997-2000. He is a past trustee of the TMS Foundation.

Naturally, I wanted to give something back to TMS, and am humbled that such an august group of professionals believed my contributions worthy of the 2002 Distinguished Service Award.”
