Recipient: 2002 Educator Award



The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society's Educator Award was established in 1985 to recognize outstanding contributions to education in metallurgical engineering and/or materials science and engineering. The award is not limited to the classroom but also includes recognition of innovative ways of educating the general populace.

Alan Lawley

Citation: "For his many and varied contributions to high-quality and innovative education in the classroom, with his research and with industry."

Biography: Alan Lawley is the A.W. Grosvenor Professor of Materials Engineering at Drexel University. He earned a B.S. and Ph.D. in metallurgy at the University of Birmingham in 1955 and 1958, respectively. He has authored more than 250 archival and conference publications, authored one book, and edited several texts and conference proceedings.


Quote: “This award is a true milestone culminating a career as an engineering educator that spans more than three decades. As a former president of TMS, it is an achievement that provides deep satisfaction – a ‘passing grade’ in my chosen profession.
