Recipients: 2002 Light Metals Division JOM Best Paper Award



The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society's Light Metals Division JOM Best Paper Award, established in 1994, is presented to the author(s) of a paper published in an issue of the preceding volume year of JOM under a light metals-related technical topic.
Paper Title: “Inert Anodes for Al Smelters: Energy Balances and Environmental Impact” in the May, 2001 issue of JOM.


Recipient PhotoHalvor Kvande

Biography: Halvor Kvande is director of technology at Hydro Aluminium a.s He earned an M.S. and Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from the University of Trondheim in 1969 and 1979 respectively.

Recipient PhotoWarren Haupin

Biography: Warren Haupin is a retired senior fellow of Alcoa Laboratories. He earned a B.S. in electrochemical engineering from the Pennsylvania State University in 1942.

“We are very honored by this award and see it as a great recognition and encouragement. The subject of inert anodes in aluminum electrolysis cells will continue to be of great interest in the years to come.

I have maintained active participation in TMS annual meetings and TMS Industrial Aluminum Electrolysis courses for a number of years. TMS has given me the opportunity to present research work and get it printed in the Light Metals Books, which now have become the major source of new information in the field of aluminum production. Also, I have benefited from the professional and personal relationships with fellow TMS members. “
