Quote: “Our objective in writing this paper was to dispel some long-held (and erroneous) beliefs of the chemistry of calcium in the Bayer Process and to demonstrate how this knowledge could be put to immediate and very profitable use in improving the performance of alumina refining. We are delighted that our aim was met sufficiently well that it was deemed worthy of the 2001 Light Metals Award and we are very grateful to the Awards Committee for this honour.”
