Recipient: 2003 Application to Practice Award



The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society's Application to Practice Award was established in 1985 to recognize outstanding achievement in the transfer of research results or findings in the metallurgical and materials science fields into commercial production and practical use as a representative of an industrial, academic, governmental, or technical organization.

James C. Williams

Citation: "For outstanding achievement in transforming materials and process research and development into production of higher-performance, longer-life components for commercial and military aircraft engines."

Biography: James C. Williams is the Honda Professor and Dean of Engineering at The Ohio State University (OSU). Before joining OSU, Dr. Williams was general manager of the Materials & Process Engineering Department at GE Aircraft Engines from 1988–1999. He was affiliated with Carnegie Mellon Institute in various capacities from 1975–1988.

Dr. Williams earned his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in metallurgical engineering from the University of Washington in 1962, 1964, and 1968, respectively. He has had significant involvement in programs aimed at increasing women and minority participation in engineering. Dr. Williams has received many honors and awards including the TMS Leadership Award in 1993. He has authored over 200 technical publications and given more than 500 lectures worldwide.
