Recipients: The 2003 LMD Light Metals Award

The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society's Light Metals Division Light Metals Award, established in 1983, is awarded to the author(s) of a paper published in the preceding year's volume of Light Metals, which notably exemplifies the solution of a practical problem.
Paper Title: “A Radioscopic Technique to Observe Bubbles in Liquid Aluminum”

Recipient PhotoMarc Bertherat

Biography: Marc Bertherat is a cast-house process manager at Pechiney Aluminium Dunkerque. He earned his Ph.D. in metallurgy and material science from the Institute National Polytechnique in 2000.

Recipient PhotoThierry Odievre

Biography: Thierry Odievre is a destructive and non-destructive testing laboratory manager at Pechiney CRV. His research has centered on aluminum alloy.

Recipient PhotoMichel Allibert

Biography: Michel Allibert is a consultant in pyrometallurgy. He was affiliated with the National Center for Scientific Research from 1964 until his retirement early in 2002. His experiment-based research on hightemperature liquids has included thermodynamic properties of mixing of slags and fluxes; modeling and mass spectrometric measurements; chemical exchanges in pyrometallurgical processes involving liquid metal and slags for applications in steel, copper, and aluminum industries; and mass or material transfer between liquid metals and molten salts in the treatment of nuclear fuels or wastes.

Recipient PhotoPierre Le Brun

Biography: Pierre Le Brun is a research engineer in the melting and casting research unit of Pechiney CRV. He received the Belgium Aluminium Association Award in 1993.

Quote: “This award represents the accomplishment of a combined research project. Our team was composed of specialists in industrial process, liquid metal treatment, and non-destructive testing. Without the cooperation of all these different searchers, this work could not have been done.It also shows the importance of experimentation to confirm the theory and to calibrate digital simulation models.”
