Recipients: 2004 Light Metals Division JOM Best Paper Award



The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society's Light Metals Division JOM Best Paper Award, established in 1994, is presented to the author(s) of a paper published in an issue of the preceding volume year of JOM under a light metals-related technical topic.
Paper Title: Paper: “Cairo University and EgyptAlum: 20 Years of Cooperation in Aluminum Reduction” in the May, 2003 issue of JOM.


Recipient PhotoSaad El-Raghy

Biography: Saad El-Raghy is a professor of metallurgical engineering at Cairo University. He earned his B.S. at Cairo University in 1962, his M.S. and Ph.D. at the University of London in 1966 and 1969, respectively, all in metallurgical engineering. He is a member of the National Academy of Science and Technology and a fellow of the Society of Egyptian Engineers. His interest in engineering education is evident. He has published 15 papers in this field, organized local symposia, and was the secretary-general of the UNESCOWFEO Third World Congress on Engineering Education. These activities brought him to the UNESCO as member of the International Committee of Engineering Education and the National Higher Education Enhancement program.

Recipient PhotoZaki Bassouni

Biography: Zaki Bassouni is chair and CEO of the Aluminium Company of Egypt. He earned his B.S. in chemical engineering from Cairo University in 1967. He has received the National Prize of Excellence, was a project manager of an extrusion plant, and is a board member for Egyptalum, Damco, and Forging Company.

“This award is an international recognition of a major achievement of mine: University-Industry Partnership. My TMS membership for more than 26 years is an asset to my career and profession. JOM, annual meetings and proceedings are excellent venues to follow advances in metallurgical engineering. Some of the TMS publications are textbooks for some of my courses.“
