Recipient: 2006 Light Metals Distinguished Service Award

The LMD Distinguished Service Award, established in 1995, recognizes an individual whose continuous service to TMS Light Metals Division activities has clearly facilitated the Society’s capability to serve its light metals-oriented members and their supporting organizations.

Recipients: John Hryn and Howard I. Kaplan

Citation: For being instrumental in initiating and nurturing a separate magnesium committee of LMD – TMS to its successful maturity since the year 2000.

Recipient Photo

John Hryn is a metallurgical engineer (708) at Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois. He is principal investigator for several research projects on the development of advanced energy efficient, cost-effective and environmentally friendly technologies.

Dr. Hryn has been actively involved in TMS, having chaired numerous technical sessions, organized symposium and worked on five technical committees.

Howard I. Kaplan is vice president of chemicals and by-products at U.S. Magnesium LLC in Utah. Dr. Kaplan’s career has spanned 35 years, from research scientist to senior management, in the metallurgy field.

A member of TMS since the start of his career, he has worked on technical committees as well as programming for the annual meetings.

Recipient: 2005 TMS Light Metals Distinguished Service Award

The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society's Aluminum Distinguished Service Award established in 1995, recognizes an individual whose continuous service to the Light Metals Division's Aluminum Committee activities has facilitated the Society's ability to serve its aluminum-oriented members and their supporting organizations.

Christian M. Bickert

Citation: For his dedication and continuing leadership, including service on the LMD program, publications, and awards committees, and as the Aluminum Committee JOM advisor.

Biography: Christian Bickert is a consultant for Aluminium Pechiney, as the North American Representative for Technology Transfer. He has been a member of TMS since 1983 with activity in the Aluminum Committee of the Light Metals Division (LMD), chairman of the Executive Aluminum Committee, publisher of the Light Metals proceedings in 1990, JOM advisor, and recipient of the LMD 2002 Technical Service Award.
