The Light Metals Award, established in 1983,
is given to the author(s) of a paper which notably exemplifies the solution of a practical problem and was presented the preceding year in a Light Metals Division-sponsored session at the TMS Annual Meeting.

Gary P. Tarcy is program manager for electrolysis R&D at Alcoa Technical Center in Pennsylvania. He directs efforts towards improving the performance of potrooms for Alcoa smelters worldwide.
He has been with Alcoa R&D for 27 years. Tarcy earned his master’s degree in chemistry from Bowling Green State University
Knut Torklep spent the majority of his career at Elkem as a senior specialist at the corporate research center in Norway. Dr. Torklep’s main contributions to Hall-Heroult reduction cell technology were improvements in experimental techniques and model verification.
That included the determination of current efficiencies, the subject of the paper for which he is receiving this award. He retired in 2005.
