Recipient: 2006 SMD Distinguished Scientist/Engineer Award
The SMD Distinguished Scientist/Engineer Award, established in 1996,
recognizes an individual who has made a long-lasting contribution to the fundamental understanding of microstructure, properties and performance of structural materials for industrial applications.
Citation: For his contributions to understanding aluminum alloy microstructure-mechanical properties-processing relationships, especially the fundamental effects of slip localization and development of technologically important Al-Li based alloys
Biography: Edgar A. Starke Jr. is University Professor and Oglesby Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Virginia.
During his 42-year-career, Dr. Starke has researched the effects of processing and microstructure on the properties of aluminum and titanium alloys for making lighter and more fuel-efficient aircraft and automobiles.
