Honors and Awards

The mission of TMS is to promote the global science and engineering professions concerned with minerals, metals, and materials.

 

Recipient: 2009 William Hume-Rothery Award

The William Hume-Rothery Award recognizes outstanding scholarly contributions to the science of alloys and includes an invitation to the recipient to be the honored lecturer at the William Hume-Rothery Memorial Symposium during the TMS Annual Meeting. The award was established in 1972.

Biography:
John H. Perepezko is a professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees in metallurgical engineering at The Polytechnic Institute of New York University, formerly the Polytechnic University, in 1967 and 1968, respectively. He earned his doctorate in metallurgy and materials science in 1973 at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Following completion of his doctorate and a postdoctoral appointment at Carnegie Mellon, he joined the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1975.

He has also held visiting appointments at the Universitat des Saarlandes and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. He is chair of the advisory panel to NASA on microgravity materials science. He is the author and co-author of more than 170 papers on solidification, metastable structures, kinetics, and the analysis and modeling of microstructure developments and serves on the board of several journals and international conferences. He holds five patents. He has received numerous honors and has presented 11 invited lectures worldwide.
