Honors and Awards

The Institute of Metals Lecturer & Robert Franklin Mehl Award established in 1921, recognizes an outstanding scientific leader who is selected to present a lecture at the TMS Annual Meeting.

Biography:
Herbert Gleiter is the director of the Institute of Nanotechnology Research Center in Karlsruhe, Germany. He has championed the development of nanostructural materials on many levels and has formulated research visions, as well as produced experimental and theoretical results for more than 25 years.

He earned a doctorate in physics at the University of Stuttgart in Germany, and was previously a professor at the University of Bochum in Germany, and Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, both in Cambridge. In 1994, he was appointed to the executive committee of the research center at Karlsruhe and has earned many accolades for the discovery of nano-crystalline materials and innovative work.
