Tom Battle has been a research engineer in the Titanium Technologies business unit for DuPont since 1990. Most of this time has been spent in a variety of research positions relating to the manufacture of titanium dioxide white pigment. For the past two years, he has been heavily involved in returning DuPont to the production of titanium metal powder, first as project manager for the commercialization facility and now as applications development engineer.

Battle earned undergraduate degrees in materials engineering and astronomy at the University of Michigan, a master’s degree in metallurgical engineering at the Colorado School of Mines, and a Ph.D. in materials and metallurgical engineering from Michigan. He then spent a year and a half as a post-doctoral research fellow at the Centre for Numerical Modelling and Process Analysis at Thames Polytechnic in the United Kingdom (now the University of Greenwich).

Battle’s volunteer work with TMS began with the former Synthesis, Control, and Analysis in Materials Processing Committee, where he moved from symposium organizer to vice-chair and chair. As an Extraction & Processing Division (EPD) Council member, he represented the council to the membership and then the Programming Committees. He then became vice-chair and chair of the Pyrometallurgy and Aqueous Processing committees in succession. He has also been a member of the EPD Awards Committee, Hardy-Mathewson Awards Committee, TMS ad hoc Industrial Alliance Committee, and the TMS Strategic Planning Committee.
