| Ellen K. Cerreta Director, Membership & Student Development |
Ellen Cerreta is a technical staff member within the Structure/Property Relations Group of the Materials Science Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory. She joined Los Alamos in 2001 as a post doctoral fellow and became a technical staff member in 2003. Cerreta earned a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Virginia in 1996 and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 1997 and 2001, respectively.
Cerreta’s research has focused primarily on the relationship between microstructural and substructural evolution to mechanical properties and damage processes in metals. Her graduate work was dedicated to understanding the development of substructure in creep deformed intermetallics, and as a post doc, she studied the constitutive response of group IVa HCP metals. Recently, her work has been focused on dynamic damage due to shock loading and shear deformation of metals. Cerreta has more than 30 publications and has mentored numerous students and three post docs.
Her research and professional service efforts have earned her recognition, including being selected as a 2007 TMS International Scholar, a 2004 TMS Young Leader Intern (now the professional development award), a recipient of the 2004 Women’s Diversity Working Group Mentoring Award, and winner of the 1996 American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Design Contest. In 2007, Cerreta was invited by the National Academy of Engineers to participate in the German-American Frontiers of Engineering Symposium.
Cerreta’s list of professional service activities includes leadership roles within TMS and service roles with ASM and at Los Alamos. At TMS, Cerreta has served as chair of the Young Leaders Committee, chair of the Mechanical Behavior of Materials Committee, and Structural Materials Division programming representative. She has organized seven different symposia at the Materials Science & Technology conferences and TMS Annual Meetings. Cerreta is a member of the Material Advantage Committee, the ASM/TMS Titanium Committee, and the TMS Membership Committee. Within Los Alamos, Cerreta has served on many proposal review committees and the Los Alamos National Laboratory Fellow Screening Committee and has recently been selected to participate in the Leadership Development Institute.
