Kevin J. Hemker is a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University, with joint appointments in the departments of Materials Science & Engineering and Earth & Planetary Sciences. Hemker holds a B.S. in metallurgy from the University of Cincinnati and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in materials science and engineering from Stanford University. He completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL).

He was named a U.S. National Science Foundation National Young Investigator, was an invited professor at the EPFL (1995) and the University of Paris XIII (2001), and received the ASM Materials Science Research Silver Medal in 2001.

His research group is engaged in research on the identifi cation of processing- microstructure-property relations in materials for microelectromechanical systems, characterization and modeling of thermal barrier coatings, deformation of nanocrystalline metals, and high-resolution electron microscopy characterization of dislocation core geometries in metals and alloys.

Hemker has authored or co-authored more than 125 journal articles and proceedings, co-edited four books, presented numerous invited and plenary lectures, and edits Scripta Materialia. He has been a member of TMS for 25 years, first as a student and then as a professional. He has been a member of the TMS Public & Governmental Affairs Committee since 2004 and a member of the TMS Strategic Planning Committee since 2005. Hemker and his students have also actively participated in Congressional Visit Days events with TMS and the Federation of Materials Societies each of the past four years.
