Joy A. Hines is a member of the research staff at the Research and Advanced Engineering Laboratory at Ford Motor Company. She works in the area of casting and solidification modeling and mechanical properties evaluation of aluminum and magnesium alloys for powertrain and body applications.

Hines holds a B.S. in materials science from Rice University. She earned an M.S. degree in high-temperature creep in superplastic ceramics from the University of California, San Diego. She earned her Ph.D. with a dissertation on the kinetics of recrystallization in adiabatic shear bands in metals. Upon graduation, Hines studied high-cycle fatigue in titanium alloys as a post-doctoral researcher at the Technical University Hamburg-Harburg in Hamburg, Germany.

In her TMS activities, Hines has served as vice chair of the TMS Global Innovations Committee, chair of the Solidification Committee, and as an active member of the Materials Processing & Manufacturing Division Council.
