John N. Hryn
TMS Director/Chair, Light Metals Division

John N. Hryn is a principal process development engineer at Argonne National Laboratory. He is the principal investigator on a number of research projects, including development of inert anodes for aluminum production, lost foam casting of magnesium, development of ultrananocrystalline diamond coatings, and development of nanoporous separation membranes. Hryn joined TMS in 1993 and has served in various leadership positions on several technical committees.

His research interest is in developing costeffective and environmentally sound technologies for metals production, processing, and recycling. Hryn earned a Ph.D. in extractive metallurgy and molten salt electrochemistry from the University of Toronto. As a post-doctorate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he designed and performed cell tests with metal anodes in aluminum electrolysis.

Hryn has published more than 50 publications, holds four U.S. patents, and has received numerous awards related to his research. Currently, he is developing energy efficient manufacturing, nano-efficient manufacturing, and nano-manufacturing initiatives to help strengthen the U.S. manufacturing sector.
