Ray D. Peterson is vice president of technology for IMCO Recycling, where he has worked since 1997. Prior to joining IMCO, Peterson worked for 13 years in a series of positions for Corporate Research and Development of Reynolds Metals Company, including manager of the Process Metallurgy Department at Reynolds’ Manufacturing Technology Laboratory.
Peterson received his B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 1980 and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Metallurgy from the University of Utah in 1983 and 1984, respectively. His research interests include molten salt reactions, high-temperature thermochemistry, reaction kinetics, heat and energy transport, and molten metal processing. Peterson has published more than 30 papers and holds five U.S. patents. He has been an invited speaker at a number of technical conferences related to aluminum processing.
Peterson is currently vice-chair of the TMS Light Metals Division. He also served as chair of the Aluminum Committee in 2000, chair of the Recycling Committee from 1997–1999, and as the editor of Light Metals 2000. He co-organized the Third International Symposium on Recycling of Metals and Engineered Materials in 1995. In 1991, he shared the TMS Light Metals Best Paper Award with a coworker and received the Recycling Technology Award for 2002 Light Metals. Peterson has been an instructor at the CSM Recycling Metals from Industrial Waste Short Course, and he also serves as an industrial advisor to several Metallurgy/Materials Science Departments.
