Garry W. Warren is professor in the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Utah in 1978 and spent eight years as a faculty member at Carnegie Mellon University before moving to the University of Alabama in 1986. In his 27-year academic career, Warren has published more than 70 papers on various topics, including the electrochemistry and leaching behavior of various sulfide minerals, corrosion behavior of NdFeB permanent magnets, corrosion and archivability of metal particle recording media, and the use of electrochemical techniques to evaluate the protective ability of polymer coatings.
He is a member of a number of professional societies including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Magnetics Society, the Electrochemical Society, and TMS. He was the faculty advisor for the TMS-ASM Joint Student Chapter at the University of Alabama from 1986–2001, during which time the student chapter won a Chapter of Excellence award five times. For many years, Warren has been especially active in the Extraction & Processing Division (EPD) where he has served in numerous capacities including the EPD Executive Council, chair of the Publications Committee, editor of EPD Congress, chair of the Programming Committee, chair of the Continuing Education Committee, and chair of the Aqueous Processing Committee. He has also served on the TMS Programming Committee and the TMS Board of Directors as chair of the Publications Coordinating Committee. He has served on the Financial Planning Committee since February 2005.
