TMS Boston Chapter: Newsletter

Vol. 2, No. 1, October 12, 2005
Editor-in-Chief: Rajesh Ranganathan

To Members and Friends of the Boston Section of TMS:
The Boston Section of TMS Executive Committee is scheduling eight interesting seminar meetings for this year. Most of the meetings will be held at MIT faculty Club, some of them in association jointly with other professional society. One of the meetings will be a plant tour at H.C.Starck. Once the plans are finalized, you will receive invitations via email and the schedule will be posted on the website.

Subcommittees:
The TMS Boston Section currently has no subcommittees. We would like to form several subcommittees to get people involved and provide better services to the local members we serve. The subcommittees we would like to form are as follows (with description in parentheses):

  • Newsletter (edit, write, distribute, publish newsletter for local members)
  • Membership Development (increase and retain local membership)
  • Student Affairs (involve local student chapters with the TMS Boston Section)
  • Governmental Affairs (Write, maintain, publish and update the TMS Boston Section Charter, Constitution and Bylaws. Interact with TMS national headquarters staff to ensure compliance with any requirements)
  • Advertisement (Obtain sponsorship in exchange for advertisement from local businesses)
  • Planning and Activities (Develop, plan, and schedule activities on a yearly basis)
  • Webmaster (Design and keep current information on the TMS Boston Section web site)

Rates:

  • TMS Boston Section Yearly Dues: $2 for students; $7 for all others.
  • Dinner Meetings: $8 for students; $20 for members; and $25 for non-members.

Dues/Dues Form: Dues may be paid in person at the meeting or by sending a check along with the Chapter Affiliation Form.

Website: The TMS Boston Section launched its website to post the schedule and other useful information. We continue to maintain this website and we are looking for a volunteer to be the Webmaster. Please contact me if you’re interested in you’re interested in volunteering.

It is with great excitement that I welcome the Boston Section of TMS members to a new year of events and activities designed to bring you up-to-date information in the diverse fields of minerals, metals, and materials and provide a forum for building upon your networking and professional skills. The 2005-2006 season of the Boston Section of TMS began with a bang on Tuesday, October 4, 2005, with the presentation by Mr. Charles Reade of Reade Advanced Materials on the topic of "Preventing Dust Explosions in Inorganic Powder Environments." One of the things I enjoyed about this joint meeting between TMS and APMI was the open Q&A with industry experts in handling flammable and combustible metal powders. The 2005-2006 schedule includes 8 unique and interesting meeting topics. These meetings range from dinner engagements with a guest speaker to plant tours. I encourage everyone to attend and feel free to invite guests. In closing, there are also many opportunities within the Boston Section of TMS get involved by taking a position on the Executive Committee or Chairing a Subcommittee. Please see me or one of the other Executive Committee members about these opportunities.

Have a great year!
